Podere ai Valloni

Podere ai Valloni is a benchmark producer of Italy’s Alto Piemonte region, producing Boca DOC since the birth of the denomination in 1969. Here cool climate, high altitude Nebbiolo (known locally as Spanna), Vespolina and Bonarda grow on the porphyric soils of the ancient Valsesia super volcano. Farmed organically since 2011 and completely surrounded by forest, the estate is a true jewel of biodiversity.
The utmost care is given to the management of the vineyard, favoring low tillage of the soil, manual pruning, zero chemical weeding and very limited sulfur and copper use.
The wines are produced exclusively with estate fruit, a very low yield per hectare and demanding grape selection. The microclimate is continually ventilated by fresh mountain currents that descend from the higher alpine valleys. Grapes ripen slowly, maintain good freshness, with great acidity and are harvested in mid/late October. Adherence to tradition in the production of long-aging wines such as Boca DOC Nebbiolo has been combined in recent years with the production of highly drinkable Colline Novaresi DOC Nebbiolo and Vespolina-based wines that focus on the freshness and typical aromas of the area's native grapes.
On the site of the 18th century Ca Finazzi, the current winery has been in operation since 1960 and under the discerning gaze of the Sertorio family since 1980 when Valloni began to reestablish the production of Boca DOC wines; the first vintage appearing in 1983 after years of struggles in the region. The history and quality of the winery is beyond dispute. Perched at the top of the Boca appellation at 480m (grapes here cannot grow above 500m), Valloni’s old vines (65-35 years) grow wines are structured and especially mineral, with a freshness and acidity all their own.
